glimpses of the berkeley folk music festival, summer 1968.
Great, tantalizing TV news footage of the 1968 Berkeley Folk Music Festival from the San Fransisco State University’s Bay Area Television Archives. Bluegrass, casual pickin’, a choir singing, and the audience out in the sun out on the Cal campus’s Sproul Plaza.
This was the year that there were major protests going on just down the street on Telegraph Avenue. It’s amazing the festival was held at all, but it went off peacefully.
If anyone ever locates copies of the KQED “Summer Sampler” show, it contains much more footage of the Berkeley Folk Music Festival from 1967, 1968, and 1970. Please contact me if you have any leads on where this footage might be!
Hi there, I’m looking for audio and or video of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach’s performances at the Berkeley Folk Festival in the years 1966, ’67, & ’68. Please let me know if you have any information regarding this. Thank you very much.
You can find the 1968 performance both in the Berkeley Folk Music Festival digital repository and, I think, on YouTube: https://youtu.be/B0-shOhGrLI. The 1966 performance used to be on YouTube, but I don’t know if if it is there anymore. It is not in the digital repository for the festival but the recording exists. I have never seen the 1967 recording anywhere. If you find any footage or additional recordings, please let us at the BFMF Project know!
